What is Print on Demand?

To kick things off, let’s delve into what print on demand actually means. Print on demand is a business model where products are created and customized only after a customer places an order. Unlike traditional printing methods that involve bulk production, print on demand allows entrepreneurs to offer a wide variety of products without the need for upfront inventory or minimum order quantities.

Print on demand offers numerous benefits and opportunities for entrepreneurs in the United States. Here are some key advantages:

  1. Low startup costs: With print on demand, you don’t need to invest heavily in inventory or equipment. This significantly reduces your initial expenses and makes it easier to launch your business.
  2. Wide product selection: Print on demand platforms offer a vast range of products to choose from, including t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, phone cases, and more. This allows you to cater to different customer preferences and expand your product offerings.
  3. Flexibility and customization: Print on demand allows you to customize products with unique designs, texts, or images. This level of personalization helps you create products that resonate with your target audience and stand out in a competitive market.
  4. No inventory management: With print on demand, you don’t have to worry about managing inventory or dealing with leftover stock. Products are manufactured and shipped directly to your customers, saving you time and resources.
  5. Scalability: Print on demand is easily scalable. As your business grows, you can seamlessly handle increasing order volumes without the need for additional storage space or production capacity.

Print on demand opens up exciting possibilities for entrepreneurs to enter the e-commerce industry and build a successful online business. Whether you’re a creative individual looking to turn your designs into profit or an established brand seeking to expand your merchandise line, print on demand offers a convenient, cost-effective, and sustainable way to bring your products to market.

“Print on demand is a game-changer in the e-commerce world. It eliminates the risks and challenges associated with traditional inventory-based businesses, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on creativity, marketing, and customer satisfaction.” – John Smith, successful print on demand entrepreneur

Choosing the Right Print on Demand Platform

When it comes to building a successful print on demand business, choosing the right platform is a crucial decision. With a multitude of options available, it’s important to consider several key factors that align with your goals and target audience. I’ll provide information to help you through the process of evaluating different platforms, so you can make an informed decision for your business.

Factors to Consider

  • Product Variety: Look for a platform that offers a wide range of products to fulfill your customers’ demands. From t-shirts and hoodies to home decor and accessories, having a diverse product catalog is essential for attracting a larger customer base. The two  most common platforms are Printify and Printful.  While they do have some of the same products, they are slightly different.
  • Quality and Print Options: Ensure that the platform provides high-quality prints and offers customization options such as multiple print techniques, sizes, and color choices. This will enable you to create unique and visually appealing products. Printify works with several printing companies, so they do not actually print and ship anything.  This platform gives you the option of choosing the print provider based on pricing and reviews. Printful provides printing services for many of their products so there may be better consistency in the quality of printing.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Choose a platform that is intuitive and user-friendly. A simple and efficient interface will save you time and make the design and product creation process smoother.  I personally used 2 platforms – Printify and Printful. I find Printify is easier to use, but that may only be because I have used them for a longer period of time.  Printful has a similar user interface but I have only recently started using them so I am not as comfortable with it.
  • Integration with E-commerce Platforms: Consider whether the print on demand platform integrates seamlessly with popular e-commerce platforms like Shopify or WooCommerce. This integration allows for easier management of orders, inventory, and shipping.  Both Printify and Printful integrate with various POD platforms.  At the time of this writing (March 2024), Printify integrates with 12 platforms including Walmart, Etsy, WooCommerce, Shopify, and more. Printful integrates with 23 platforms.
  • Pricing Structure: Evaluate the pricing structure of each platform and compare their fees, including product costs, printing charges, and any subscription or transaction fees. Find a platform that offers competitive pricing without compromising on quality.  Again, comparing Printify and Printful, each has a free tier.  The Premium tier for each gives discounts on products so you will have a greater profit, however, it does not make sense to pay for the upper tier until you are selling about 10 products per month.  Printify offers about 20% off items for their premium service for $29.00 / month.  Printful also offers about 20% items for $24.99 / month.
  • Customer Support: Ensure that the platform provides excellent customer support to address any concerns or technical issues that may arise. Responsive and knowledgeable support will help you navigate any challenges smoothly.  Both Printify and Printful  have live chat and contact information listed, so it’s fairly easy to contact them, if needed.

Remember, selecting the right print on demand platform sets the foundation for your business’s success. Take the time to evaluate and compare different platforms to find the one that aligns with your needs and allows you to create high-quality products that delight your customers.

By carefully considering these factors, you can confidently choose a print on demand platform that empowers you to create and sell amazing products. Let’s explore the potential of print on demand together!

Even though Printify and Printful have product generators to design, most POD sellers use an outside source to make their designs.  Some use AI tools while others, just use stock graphics on various platforms.  From what I see (and use) most people use Canva and Kittl.  Both of these programs have free and paid tiers.  I actually tried the free tier but felt I could make much better designs with the paid, so I upgraded.  I have been very happy with my choice. Both also have AI tools.  I have used Kittl’s AI several times but have not tried Canva’s.  Kittl has one of the few AI tools that does graphics with text – well.  Most AI tools do not do text well.  It’s not perfect, but much better than anything I have used so far.

Another platform to get fonts, graphics, and even some AI images is Creative Fabrica.  Again, it has a free and paid tier system. The cost is less than Kittl or Canva, and I find I primarily use it for fonts and clipart.  I honestly have not really explored all the functions they offer.

Designing High-Quality Products

Now, let’s dive into the art of designing high-quality print on demand products. To create products that stand out and appeal to your customers, it’s essential to focus on design, image optimization, and product selection.

Creating Eye-Catching Designs

Design plays a crucial role in attracting customers and making your products memorable. Here are some tips to create eye-catching designs:

  • Understand your target audience: Research their preferences, interests, and current design trends.
  • Simplicity is key: Opt for clean and simple designs that convey your message effectively.
  • Use vibrant colors: Colors can evoke emotions and grab attention. Experiment with color combinations that resonate with your brand.
  • Consider typography: Choose fonts that are legible and complement your design. Experiment with different sizes, weights, and styles to create visual hierarchy.
  • Step back from your computer and look at what you have created.  Then ask yourself, “if this niche interested me, would I buy this product?”
  • Get good mock-ups.  You can purchase some on Etsy or try Placeit. The best thing about Placeit is all of their items are copy-right free.  They also have a free and paid tier. You can pay month to month, although it is more  costly.

Before you start designing, do some research on what is trending.  Be careful though.  You have to stay away from anything that has a trademark or copyright.  Yes, you will see others selling those items but there are many that have been forced to pay fines, remove their listings from various platforms, or even had their online stores shut down.  The ones you see out there just haven’t been caught – yet.

Remember, when you are looking for what is trending, just get inspiration from them, never copy.  Someone else worked hard to come up with that design and it’s just unethical to steal it.  You can change colors, rearrange graphics, change the text, or add additional graphics to it to make it your own, just don’t copy and paste.

You can check trademarks several ways.  The best (but not the most user friendly) is the US patent and trademark site.  Click here to access that site.  Another site is Merch Informer, although it is not free.  I find it is easier to use, especially when checking several “slogans”.

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs

Optimizing Images for Printing

To ensure the best print quality, it’s important to optimize your images. Consider the following:

  • Use high-resolution images: High-quality images are essential for sharp and clear prints. Avoid using low-resolution images that may appear pixelated.
  • Format and size: Use the appropriate file format (such as PNG or JPEG) and ensure your images are sized correctly for the products you offer.
  • Color mode: Convert your images to CMYK color mode for accurate color reproduction in print.
  • Check image placement: Preview how your design will appear on the product to ensure important elements are not cut off or distorted.

This may sound confusing, but you can easily do all of these steps right in Canva or Kittl. Once you finish your design you will  need to download it to your computer. For designs to be placed on most items, you will also want to make sure to remove the background.  You can do that by clicking on transparent background in Canva, or remove background in Kittl before downloading.

Selecting the Right Products to Offer

Choosing the right products to offer is crucial for customer satisfaction and business success. Consider the factors below when selecting products:

  1. Quality and durability: Partner with print on demand suppliers known for providing high-quality products that withstand regular use.
  2. Diverse product range: Offer a variety of products to cater to different customer preferences and expand your target market.
  3. Consider your niche: Align your product selection with your niche market. For example, if you’re targeting pet owners, consider offering products such as pet accessories or clothing.
  4. Market demand: Research popular products in your industry and stay up-to-date with market trends to ensure you’re offering products that customers are looking for.

Ensure your designs are tailored to the specific products you offer. Consider the size and shape of each product to optimize the design placement and create a visually appealing product.

By following these design tips, optimizing your images, and selecting the right products, you can create high-quality print on demand products that captivate your customers and enhance your brand.

Pricing

Some common price ranges are:

Product

Price Range

Product Features

T-shirts $15 – $30 Various sizes and colors available
Mugs $10 – $20 Dishwasher and microwave safe
Tote Bags $10 – $25 Durable and eco-friendly materials
Phone Cases $15 – $35 Various phone models supported

When setting your price, you want to make sure you will make a profit.  After all, you have worked hard on your designs.  Printify and Printful will tell you how much each item will cost you when it is sent to production and what the shipping cost is estimated to be.  If you are not going to, or cannot offer “free shipping”, add the production cost and your desired profit to set your price.

If you are going to offer “free shipping”, include that into your pricing plan.  Not all selling platforms allow for you to offer “free shipping”.  The last thing you want, is to be charged shipping and you did not price your item high enough to cover it and make a profit.  I also charge a bit more for items that are personalized, since it requires additional steps and time to provide that option, again, not all selling platforms allow that.

Here are two examples of how you can set pricing:

  • Customer pays shipping: product cost + desired profit = selling price
    • $4.50 (cost) + $5.00 (profit) = $9.50 (retail)
    • You can leave the selling price as is, or you can round up ($9.95).
    • You set your price so it’s up to you.
  • You offer “free shipping”: product cost + desired profit + shipping = selling price
    • $4.50 (cost) + $5.00 (profit) + $4.95 (shipping) = $14.45
    • Again, you can leave the selling price as is, or you can round up ($14.95).

Yes, the customer is paying shipping in both situations but if you look at the examples, you must adjust your selling price to make a profit. Using the information in these examples, and offering “free shipping”, you would only make 5 cents if you did not adjust your pricing to cover the shipping cost. That’s not even enough to pay any processing fees that your platform may charge for listings or credit card transactions.  You would lose money.

Effective marketing and promotion are vital for the success of any business, including print on demand. To ensure your print on demand business thrives in the competitive market, it’s crucial to implement proven strategies and tactics. Managing Print on Demand Orders and Fulfillment

Smooth order management and efficient fulfillment processes are crucial for customer satisfaction. When it comes to handling print on demand orders, you want to ensure a seamless experience for your customers from start to finish. In this section, I will guide you through effective ways to manage your print on demand orders and streamline the fulfillment process.

Automation Tools for Order Management

Managing a high volume of print on demand orders can quickly become overwhelming without the right tools. Fortunately, there are automation tools available that can help simplify and streamline your order management process. These tools can handle tasks such as order processing, inventory updates, and shipping notifications, saving you time and reducing the risk of errors.

“By leveraging automation tools, you can focus on growing your business while ensuring a smooth order fulfillment process.”

Look for print on demand platforms that offer built-in automation features or consider integrating third-party order management apps into your e-commerce platform. These tools can provide real-time updates, track order status, and automate repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on more strategic aspects of your business.

If you are using Printify or Printful as your production partner, they both offer built-in automation.  If the product is not to be personalized, when a customer buys it on the selling platform, it is sent to to the production provider, they send it to the appropriate printer, and then the printer fulfills the order and ships directly to the customer.

If your selling platform allows for personalization, you will need to stop the automation so you can personalize the item and then you are responsible for sending it to the printer for fulfillment.

One of the great things about POD is you don’t pay for products until an order is generated by a customer.  This means they have already paid on the selling platform.  Even better, you are not responsible for inventory, production, or shipping.  All you do is design.

Customer Service and Reviews

A solid customer service strategy is crucial for the success of your print on demand business. By providing excellent customer support, handling returns or complaints effectively, and encouraging positive reviews from your customers, you can build a loyal customer base and maintain a stellar reputation.

When it comes to print on demand, customer service plays a vital role in ensuring customer satisfaction. Promptly addressing any concerns or issues raised by customers shows that you value their business and are dedicated to providing the best experience possible. Whether it’s a question about product specifications, shipping delays, or order tracking, being responsive and helpful will leave a lasting impression.

Handling returns or complaints in a fair and efficient manner is another important aspect of customer service. Offer clear guidelines for the return process and make it as hassle-free as possible for your customers. By resolving any issues amicably and swiftly, you can turn a potential negative experience into a positive one and retain the customer’s trust.

“Good customer service creates loyal customers. Passionate customers who are more likely to leave positive reviews and recommend your business to others.”

Positive customer reviews are invaluable for your print on demand business. They not only serve as social proof but also contribute to building trust and credibility among new customers. Encourage your satisfied customers to share their experiences and leave reviews on platforms such as your website, social media, or review sites relevant to your industry.

Make it easy for customers to provide feedback by creating clear channels for review submissions. Consider offering incentives such as discount codes or exclusive access to new products as a way to motivate customers to share their thoughts and experiences. And remember, always respond to customer reviews, whether positive or negative, as it demonstrates your commitment to customer satisfaction.

To give you an idea of the impact of customer reviews, take a look at the following statistics:

Statistic

Percentage

86% of customers read reviews for local businesses 86%
91% of customers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations 91%
72% of customers will take action only after reading a positive review 72%
93% of customers say online reviews impact their purchasing decisions 93%

These numbers highlight the significance of customer reviews in shaping consumer perceptions and influencing buying decisions. By actively managing your print on demand customer service and encouraging positive reviews, you can position your business for long-term success.

Scaling Your Print on Demand Business

As your print on demand business continues to grow, it’s crucial to have a well-defined plan for scaling your operations. Scaling your business involves expanding your product offerings, reaching new markets, and increasing your sales and profitability. By implementing effective strategies, you can maintain quality and efficiency while experiencing significant growth.

Expanding Product Offerings

To scale your print on demand business, consider expanding your product portfolio. Introduce new and innovative products that cater to the interests and preferences of your target audience. Conduct market research to identify trending products or niche markets that align with your brand and customer base. By diversifying your product offerings, you can attract a wider range of customers and generate more sales.

Reaching New Markets

Expanding into new markets is another vital aspect of scaling your print on demand business. Research and identify untapped regions or demographics that may have a demand for your products. Tailor your marketing efforts to effectively reach these new markets and establish a strong presence. Utilize social media platforms, influencer collaborations, and targeted advertising campaigns to expand your customer base and drive sales.

New markets may be as simple as expanding to additional selling platforms.  There are several that allow you to design products and set prices and then they are responsible for finding the print provider.  Many times they will also handle the customer service for you.  Some of these include:

  •  Redbubble
    • Free to join
    • Must post at least 5 items before your shop goes live
    • Designs are added to several products that you must adjust graphic size and placement
    • No “free shipping”
    • Can adjust prices
  • Fourthwall
    • Free to join
    • You can easily customize your store front
    • Items are live as soon as you make them public
    • Easy to use, but can be a little slow
    • No “free shipping”
  • Printify Pop-Up
    • Integrates with Printify
    • Free to join
    • Must use Printify’s stock mock-ups
    • No “free shipping”
    • Can adjust pricing
  • Tee-Public
    • Free to join
    • You can customize your store front
    • Items are live as soon as you make them public
    • Easy to use, but can be a little slow
    • No “free shipping”
    • Designs are added to several products that you must adjust graphic size and placement

Platforms like Etsy, Ebay, Amazon, and TikTok have a lot of traffic each month.  My biggest complaint with each of these is they have full control over your “store”.  The pros to each of these is the traffic to their sites.  Here are a few pros and cons I have experienced first hand:

  • Etsy:  Easy to set up but they have computer algorithms that misread stores quite often.  They will shut your store down and will not let you know why, even though they tell you to check your email for reasons and how to correct.  I have never received an email to let me know what they picked up as a “policy violation” so I could correct the issue.  I have actually read completely through their policies multiple times and never found anything I have violated. I am not the only one – there are many people that this has happened to.  You can file an appeal but if you appeal and are denied, you may lose your selling rights.  I can tell you, most appeals are denied.
  • Ebay:  Honestly, pretty much the same as Etsy.  I am not sure about an appeal process but they will close your store and not tell you why.
  • TikTok:  Easy to set up but they only allow about 3 days for orders to be processed and shipped.  Most of the time, it takes longer than that.  I had a TikTok shop and as soon as I uploaded my products from Printify, they closed my store because the time frame stated by the printer was greater than 3 days.  Printify now has a TikTok specific product catalog for this reason.  TikTok will also refund the customer, at your expense, if they have not been notified the order has been fulfilled.  Several shops have had items refunded after the product had been processed and shipped, giving the customer a free item and the shop owner a loss.
  • Amazon:  Unless you choose to pay $39.99/month, Amazon Merch on Demand is an option.  Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get accepted.  Once denied, it will be a very long time before they will allow you to resubmit your application, if at all.

So, a word of advice, don’t put all of your efforts into one platform.  Use as many as you can monitor, so if something happens to one, you have others to keep your business going.

Increasing Sales and Profitability

Scaling your print on demand business also requires a focus on increasing your sales and profitability. Implement strategies such as upselling and cross-selling to encourage customers to purchase multiple products. Offer discounts or promotions to incentivize repeat purchases and spur customer loyalty. Continuously analyze your pricing strategy and make adjustments to maximize profitability while remaining competitive in the market.
